Sorry, no we don’t. Each cottage has only one bedroom with a king sized bed.  You can book both cottages exclusively though, if you are friends or family travelling together.

How dark will it be at Night Sky Cottages?

Very dark! And especially on a moonless night. The cottages are located beneath the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve afterall. The darker it is the better for  viewing the stars and especially the Milky Way.

Will I see the Aurora Australis?

Mackenzie Country is one of New Zealand’s  top locations  to see the Aurora Australis (aka the Southern Lights). An aurora can happen at any time of the day or night and during any month of the year although the crisp clear atmosphere & long dark nights of winter make for the best viewing. The Aurora Australis can be seen from Night Sky Cottages dancing on the southern horizon.

What time of year am I most likely to see a hoar frost?

Hoar frosts generally occur once or twice during the months of June & July when fog settles in the Mackenzie Basin and freezes the moisture in the air. This turns everything into a beautiful white winter wonderland. Usually the fog lifts at night when the air is cooler and can roll in again as the sun comes up.

What time of year am I most likely to see snow?

Snow falls at Night Sky Cottages three or four times every winter (June to  August) but is not usually on the ground around the cottages for too long. Occasionally there will be a big dump of snow that might take 3-4 days to clear. This shouldn’t impede access to the cottages & the snow plough will clear Glen Lyon Road first thing in the morning.
